Blinding Vale Needs 31 More Count. Potatoad Now Pays for 30.
The target rose from 655 to 686, but Potatoad Matriarch's value doubled. Routes that already kill it are nearly intact; routes that skip it need a real rewrite.
The Blinding Vale's enemy-forces requirement increased from 655 to 686 on August 25. That is 31 more count. In the same live pass, Potatoad Matriarch's value rose from 30 to 60.
If last week's route already killed Potatoad, those two changes almost cancel: the target asks for 31 more and the Matriarch supplies 30 more. Before accounting for the other spawn adjustments, the pull list is only one raw count behind.
If the route skipped Potatoad, none of that compensation is in the route. That is the group that needs a genuine redesign.
This is a Potatoad decision, not a 4.7% tax
The new target is 4.73% higher than 655. That percentage describes the enemy-forces denominator; it does not mean every group should append 4.73% more enemies to an old route.
Enemy values changed with the target. Potatoad now contributes 60 forces, Toxic Spew's initial damage was cut in half, and Toadspawn appear within 7 yards rather than 10. Blizzard's public note says the Matriarch's value was adjusted “to keep routing the same as before.” The live numbers show how: the extra 30 from Potatoad covers almost the entire 31-count increase.
The clean split is:
| Old route | What the count change means |
|---|---|
| Killed Potatoad Matriarch | Revalidate the route; the target and Matriarch changes are nearly neutral |
| Skipped Potatoad Matriarch | Add Potatoad or replace the missing 31 with a deliberate alternative |
Do not take “nearly neutral” as permission to import blindly. Blizzard also moved enemies in the final area and removed one Radiant Spellsower before Ziekket. The intended spine may survive while individual pull notes and percentages do not.
The old skip now has a price
Some groups avoided Potatoad by taking the left-side path after the third boss, climbing to the platform and dropping into the next route. The first live week made that an attractive way to avoid Toxic Spew, adds, and the Matriarch's tank toss.
That skip now leaves 30 newly valuable forces behind. It can still be correct if the replacement trash is faster and safer for the composition, but “we skipped it last week” is no longer the whole calculation.
Community reaction explains why the choice is not automatic. Some players enjoy Potatoad as a memorable elite. Others dislike the toss, the narrow space, and Blinding Vale's tendency to chain unexpected enemies into a pull. The hotfix lowered part of the Matriarch's pressure; it did not remove Tongue Toss or turn the surrounding path into an open room.
The route should compare time and jobs, not just count. Potatoad is now a 60-count package with one tank displacement, a poison event, and add control. The replacement is whatever collection of enemies, casts, movement, and patrol risk supplies the same forces elsewhere.
The final area changed too
Blizzard adjusted the last area to reduce creature density and removed a Radiant Spellsower before Ziekket. Spellsowers cast Light Bolt Volley, a priority group cast, so one fewer caster reduces both count and an interrupt assignment.
That is consistent with Blizzard's Season 2 goal of reducing excessive caster density in Blinding Vale. It also means an old route note may assign a kick or cooldown to an enemy that no longer exists.
The final section is the wrong place to discover a route error. Blinding Vale has a 31-minute timer and four bosses. Finishing planned trash below 100% creates a backtrack or an improvised pull when cooldowns and attention were budgeted for Ziekket. Pulling everything “to be safe” is not free either; spread casters and accidental chains can consume more time than modest overcount protects.
A five-minute route audit
Before the next key, answer four questions:
- 1. Did the old route kill or skip Potatoad Matriarch?
- 2. Does the updated route tool show Potatoad at 60 and the total requirement at 686?
- 3. Has the removed Radiant Spellsower disappeared from the final pull and kick notes?
- 4. Which low-risk option repairs a small shortfall before the group commits to Ziekket?
The live game now shows enemy-forces contribution in creature tooltips. Use that as a sanity check when a route website or WeakAura still shows Potatoad at 30. A stale tool can make a correct pull list look wrong—or make an obsolete skip look complete.
A pug route should also carry a small recovery option. It needs to survive one missed patrol, one enemy that fails to join, or a pull that splits differently from the drawing. Exact 100.00% precision is valuable for a coordinated push team and fragile as a default Group Finder plan.
Pull Potatoad on purpose or skip it on purpose
The hotfix is less dramatic than “Blinding Vale needs 4.7% more trash” and more useful than a number change with no direction. Blizzard put almost all of the extra requirement onto one recognizable route choice, then softened that enemy.
For groups already killing Potatoad, refresh the percentages and inspect the final area; do not invent a whole new wing of trash. For groups using the left-side skip, compare the replacement against a now-60-count Matriarch. Whichever route wins, decide before the key starts. Potatoad should be a route choice, not the mob the tank remembers at 99%.
