Endgame

Curse of Ula'tek Is Account-Gated. Altar of Fangs Summons Are Not.

Blizzard closed an unintended path into Patch 12.1's campaign and opened a narrower path into its dungeon. Before replaying Midnight on an alt, identify which door is actually locked.

Patch 12.1 now has four access rules hiding behind one quest marker.

The Curse of Ula'tek campaign requires the main Midnight campaign to be complete on one character per account. A character that had already begun Curse before Blizzard enforced that rule can keep going. An Altar of Fangs group can summon a player who has not completed the dungeon's precursor quests. Nothing in that summon hotfix promises access to the rest of the Coiled Isle or the Venomous Abyss raid.

Those are separate states, and treating them as one is how an alt loses an evening to story it did not need—or a group waits at a stone for a player it could have summoned.

What the player wantsRule after the August 13 hotfix
Start Curse of Ula'tekComplete the main Midnight campaign on one character per account
Continue a Curse chain already begunKeep going on that character; Blizzard says it is unaffected
Enter Altar of Fangs with a groupThe group can summon a member who lacks the precursor quests
Unlock the Coiled Isle or Venomous AbyssNot granted by the Altar summon line; verify those requirements separately

The fastest route begins by naming the actual goal.

The August 13 exception opens the Vaults to an Altar group summon. It does not complete the summoned character's campaign.

The campaign gate belongs to the account

Blizzard says Curse of Ula'tek was always intended to follow Midnight's main campaign. Before August 13, some characters could start the patch story without satisfying that order. The developers closed the path because completing the connected features out of sequence could leave players in a misleading or confusing state.

The corrected requirement is narrower than "finish Midnight again on this alt." A player who has not started Curse must complete the main Midnight campaign on one character per account.

That makes the first troubleshooting question simple: has any character on this account actually finished the main Midnight story?

If the answer is no, the missing Curse start is expected. Finish the campaign on the character closest to the end. There is no benefit in restarting four zone stories on the intended Season 2 alt if another character is one chapter from satisfying the account prerequisite.

If the answer is yes, the account has the requirement Blizzard named, but the alt can still have its own unfinished quest state. Eligible level-90 alts can use Midnight's story skip through Soridormi in Silvermoon. Wowhead documents the option as Untangle Midnight Timelines, placing the character after the initial campaign.

The option is easy to miss, and current comments show why it should be a check rather than a promise. Players report looking for it before level 90 or while some prerequisite remains incomplete and finding nothing. Confirm the account completion and the alt's level before assuming the skip itself is broken. Do not abandon a working chain to make the prompt appear.

The account owns the prerequisite. The character still owns its quest log and phase.

An already-started character keeps its route

The hotfix has one unusually useful exception: characters that had already started Curse of Ula'tek should be unaffected and can continue and complete it.

Do not abandon that opening chain. Do not switch characters because somebody says Curse is now locked for every alt. That character crossed the line before Blizzard enforced the account gate, and Blizzard preserved its in-progress route.

This is also why two characters on the same account can appear to follow different rules. One began Curse while the unintended route was open. The other is attempting to start after the correction. The first continues; the second checks whether the account finished Midnight's main campaign.

If the already-started character suddenly loses its next quest, the August 13 change is not a sufficient explanation. Keep the previous quest name and completion time, avoid abandoning the chain, and report the character-specific break. Blizzard explicitly said that cohort should continue.

The summon fixes a real dungeon failure

Before the hotfix, Altar groups described reaching the summoning stone, inviting a friend who had not unlocked the Coiled Isle, and watching that player get sent back to the bridge leading toward the island. The group had technically summoned its member without gaining a usable fifth player.

Blizzard's August 13 line targets that failure. A player who has not completed the precursor campaign quests should now be summonable into the Vaults of Atal'Utek by an Altar of Fangs dungeon group.

If tonight's goal is the dungeon, use the dungeon solution. Form the group, bring the eligible players to the entrance, and summon the member who is behind on story. If the player is still returned to the bridge after the named hotfix, record the character's quest state and report the failed summon instead of assuming several hours of campaign are still required.

The community argument about whether endgame should ever be story-gated can wait. Some players want to log in for dungeons and raids without a campaign. Others see a short story unlock as part of entering a new patch zone. Neither position changes what the hotfix now permits an Altar group to do.

A dungeon summon is not a campaign skip

The summon is deliberately narrow.

Entering the Vaults does not complete the account's main Midnight campaign. It does not mark Curse chapters complete, permanently unlock the Coiled Isle, or guarantee that campaign NPCs and follow-up systems will appear afterward. It solves access for the Altar run.

It also does not establish a rule for Venomous Abyss. Players in the forum discussion understandably worried that the same story gate could affect next week's raid, but Blizzard's hotfix names Altar of Fangs dungeon groups and the Vaults of Atal'Utek. Extending that sentence to raid access would be guesswork.

Think of the summon as a visitor pass. It gets one group member through one instance door. It does not rewrite that character's story record.

This split is useful for returning players. Someone can learn Altar with friends tonight while finishing the older campaign on their own schedule. The group does not become collateral damage in one member's quest order, and the account still follows Blizzard's intended story sequence before beginning Curse.

Use the shortest route for the job

If the goal is Curse of Ula'tek, verify main-campaign completion on the account. Finish it on the nearest character if needed. For an eligible level-90 alt, check Soridormi's skip before replaying story the account has already cleared.

If the character already began Curse, preserve that chain and continue. A missing next step on that character is reportable because Blizzard said it should be unaffected.

If the goal is Altar of Fangs, use the group summon. Do not dismiss a failed post-hotfix summon as "go do the campaign" without recording it.

If the goal is the raid, the whole Coiled Isle, or every patch system, do not infer access from the dungeon exception. Complete or skip the intended story and verify the specific feature separately.

Patch 12.1's rules feel messy because Blizzard corrected them after players were already inside. The clean version is shorter: complete Midnight once for the account, preserve a character already in progress, and use the Altar summon for the dungeon.

Just do not mistake a visitor pass for a finished campaign.
