No Voidcore in the First Season 2 Vault Changes the Weapon Plan
Blizzard moved Season 2's first selectable Voidcore from August 18 to August 25. Opening-week weapon plans now need a guaranteed path before the targeted roll arrives.
A month of Season 2 gearing advice became stale in one sentence.
Blizzard originally said Nebulous Voidcores would be available through the Great Vault from the beginning of the season. Its August 1 rollover post is newer and more precise: the first Season 2 Great Vault, claimable August 18, will not offer a Voidcore. The option begins August 25 for characters that unlocked at least three panes.
That is not a small calendar footnote. August 18 is also when The Venomous Abyss opens and Mythic+ begins. Any weapon plan that treated the first Vault as a guaranteed ticket to another raid-boss roll now has a one-week hole in it.
The fix is to stop treating the August 18 Vault and the August 25 Voidcore as one decision.
The three dates that matter
| Reset | What becomes available | What it means for gearing |
|---|---|---|
| August 11 | Pre-season; Season 2 Vault credit and Crafting Sparks begin | Build a useful first Vault and keep the craft option open |
| August 18 | First Season 2 Vault; raid and Mythic+ open | Choose among guaranteed gear with no selectable Voidcore |
| August 25 | Voidcore option after at least three unlocked panes | Make the first targeted-roll decision with a live week of Season 2 loot behind you |
The August 18 Vault is real. It is built from eligible activity completed during the August 11 pre-season, and its gear can still be a major upgrade. It simply does not contain the currency option many early guides expected.
The World row has another opening-week limit: it can reach no higher than Champion 3/6 in that first Vault. Later World-row rewards can reach Hero 1/6. That makes the quality of the panes you build as important as the number.
The opening-raid weapon plan lost its fallback
Season 2 makes raid weapons unusually attractive to target. Heroic raid Vault rewards jump to Myth 1/6, and a Voidcore item matches the equivalent Vault quality for the content that qualified it. Raid-item rolls also fall from two Voidcores in Season 1 to one in Season 2.
The old opening plan therefore looked clean: unlock the desired weapon boss, take a Voidcore from the first Season 2 Vault, and buy another chance while the weapon is worth the most progression weeks.
The August 1 schedule breaks the middle step. You can kill that boss on August 18 and receive the weapon normally. You cannot fund an opening-reset bonus roll with the first Vault.
On August 25, the plan works again. One selectable Voidcore can pay for one Season 2 raid-item roll. The lost week still matters, but the system has not been deleted or pushed to Orin Straylight's eight-week research unlock.
Open the August 18 Vault without a prewritten answer
The first Vault should be judged against what the character actually owns on reset day.
- Take a strong weapon if the Vault gives you one.
- Compare a non-weapon upgrade with the value of a Spark craft and the raid weapon you can realistically reach.
- Do not pass a large guaranteed upgrade because an older checklist promised a Voidcore that is not there.
- Keep August 25 in the plan, but do not count the bonus item before it drops.
Crafting Sparks begin during pre-season. That gives a weapon-starved character a deterministic alternative, but a Spark is not an order to craft a weapon immediately. That craft competes with other crafted slots and can be expensive to replace if the raid weapon drops. Sim the character, inspect the embellishment plan, and make the call with the actual Vault open.
The delay even improves the information behind the targeted roll. By August 25, you will have seen one raid lockout, one Mythic+ week, and the Vault created by that launch-week activity. You will know whether the weapon is still the character's largest hole.
Three panes are the new minimum, not the goal
Blizzard says the August 25 Voidcore can be selected by a character that unlocked at least three Vault panes. A pane is one visible reward slot. More panes create more choices; they do not let a character take multiple weekly gear items.
For a main, three panes may happen naturally. For an alt being positioned around one chase weapon, it needs to be scheduled. One high-quality Dungeon pane is enough to produce a Vault item, but it is not enough to meet the stated Voidcore threshold.
Do not turn that into a nine-pane chore. Build three panes at qualities you would be willing to convert into a targeted roll, then stop when the extra work no longer improves the decision.
Blizzard has not said the three panes must come from a particular row. Until the live interface or a follow-up clarifies that detail, the safe instruction is the official one: unlock at least three panes and check the Vault UI before assuming the currency is available.
A Voidcore is not automatically better than good gear
The community argument around early Voidcores is already splitting into two camps.
One side sees the currency as the default choice. A Voidcore narrows the roll to a displayed pool, and an item awarded by that roll is removed from that difficulty's pool until the eligible set cycles. Every roll can therefore move the character closer to a chase weapon or trinket.
The other side points to the part that "targeted" can hide: the item is still random inside that pool. A great Vault item is guaranteed. A Voidcore may return something you do not want.
There is another wrinkle. Taking an item directly from the Great Vault does not automatically check it off the Voidcore pool. If you take a good Vault item and then roll the same content, the bonus system can still offer that item later.
That does not make the currency bad. It makes "always take the Voidcore" bad advice.
On August 25, compare three things:
- 1. the immediate value of the best guaranteed Vault item;
- 2. the current size and quality of the bonus-roll pool;
- 3. how much one removed item advances the chase item you actually need.
A nearly empty weapon-boss pool can justify risk. A broad pool full of sidegrades usually cannot beat a large guaranteed upgrade just because the currency feels more strategic.
Repair the checklist before Season 2 starts
The newest official schedule overrides the broader June promise that Voidcores would be available from the beginning of Season 2. That contradiction is why players are still swapping August 18 and August 25 in otherwise careful guides.
Use the dates, not the old phrase.
Build the first Vault during pre-season. On August 18, choose the best guaranteed path among the Vault, crafting, and normal drops. During launch week, unlock at least three panes and update the remaining-loot list. On August 25, decide whether one targeted roll is worth more than the best gear already on the screen.
The weapon plan still has a safety net. It arrives one reset later, and it asks for a decision rather than providing an automatic answer.
