Prey Season 2 Looks Better When It Stops Barking Orders
Prey Season 2 adds Nightmare-only targets, Ral'kala, Corrosive Souls, and more rewards. The best change may be the smaller one: fewer random commands interrupting the hunt.
Prey Season 2 is not getting a new difficulty tier, and that may be fine. The better news is that the system appears to be moving away from the part that made a lot of Nightmare hunts feel irritating instead of tense: random command-style interruptions that pulled attention away from what the player was already doing.
The new PTR version keeps the pressure but changes the texture. Nightmare still ramps danger through Torment, but the fresh effects lean toward combat problems: ambushes, exploding corpse snakes, and Toxic Snare roots. That is a healthier direction than being ordered to drop everything because a voice line decided the hunt needed busywork.
What Season 2 adds
Based on current PTR coverage, four new serpentine targets are being added to the Nightmare pool while Normal and Hard still lean on Season 1 hunts. The weekly hunt limit rises to fifteen, which makes sense with the Coiled Isle joining the routine, but also means the reward structure has to respect players' time.
The bigger chase is Ral'kala, Terror of the Isle, a Nightmare-only boss tied to Ossified Relics, Haunted Braziers, achievements, a pet, a mount, Corrosive Souls, and Corrosive Coins. The important caveat is that Ral'kala has not been fully tested yet, so the PTR right now tells us the shape of the chase more than its final tuning.
Corrosive power has the right boundary
Successful hunts can now award Corrosive Souls, consumables that add special effects to bracers and belts. The key line is that these effects are for world content, not dungeons or raids. That boundary is exactly what outdoor progression needs if Blizzard wants Prey to matter without turning it into another mandatory raid or Mythic+ chore.
The renown track also connects Prey to the rest of the outdoor loop. Afflicted Souls and Tormented Souls can come from Tier 6+ Bountiful Delves and feed bonus Champion or Hero-track equipment into Nightmare hunts once the relevant ranks are unlocked. That is interesting cross-content glue, as long as it does not turn into a checklist that punishes anyone who prefers one lane over another.
The reaction is really about friction
Player comments around Prey have never been purely about difficulty. Some liked the bounty fantasy and the idea of outdoor content with teeth. Others hated being interrupted while questing, disliked the old command tasks, or worried that cosmetics and weapon appearances would become another time-gated FOMO farm. The Season 2 comments are warmer where the system removes annoying commands, and sharper where old reward availability is still unclear.
That is the thing to watch before 12.1 goes live. Prey works best when Nightmare asks for awareness, class tools, and a clean target kill. It works worst when it feels like the game is yelling chores at someone who only wanted a compact outdoor challenge. Season 2 looks closer to the first version, but Ral'kala tuning, Toxic Snare readability, and old cosmetic availability still need answers.
